Gradient Yarn: Sublime DK Gradients
Several weeks back, we started offering a selection of our 60 different gradient yarn colors in our lovely and light DK weight yarn, Sublime. Let's take a look at the details of these new gradient yarns and some possible pattern choices.
At the moment, we have 32 of 60 gradient yarn colors available. We'll work over the next six months or so to fill out the entire collection, with the possible exception of the slower-moving colors like Fluoro, Vivid & Aphrodite. Sublime DK is such a great yarn - soft and well plied without being over-twisted - and is highly suitable for a full range of hand-crafted wearables. We like it for bed socks, mitts, hats, sweaters, scarves, cowls, shawls, blankets, and absolutely anything for a baby. The wool that goes into Sublime is treated for superwash (scoured and de-scaled) rather than being coated with plastic, so you can be sure what you make can survive an accidental run through a washing machine. The gauge on the yarn often falls between a true DK and a sport, making it accessible even when your pattern calls for a smaller-than-typical stitch per inch.
Gradient yarn is so popular right now that it will take no time at all for designers to come up with fabulous ways to use heavier-weight gradients like ours. I designed a free pattern, Binx, that includes our Sublime DK gradients in the suggested yarns. Binx is mostly an asymmetrical shawl formula, and hopefully you'll find it easy to read and knit up.
If you want to start with two very easy and completely free patterns, try the Honey Cowl & Rikke Hat. A little math may be needed in advance of knitting these patterns to plan out where you'll change colors with your gradient yarn kit.
With 250 grams of yarn in each Sublime Gradient Yarn kit, you get 5 - 50g skeins with a total kit yardage of 650 yards. That'll make a pretty generous shawl or at least two hats. If you're interested in sweater quantities, it helps to know that we don't dye a new batch of a gradient yarn color until the previous batch has sold completely. We like to ensure that your order will match as closely as possible, even though there's very little variation between batches.
