Prime Time

Posted by Melanie Dilworth

Our newest yarn, Prime, is the culmination of five month's of collaboration with our mill and several very special retail stores, and I couldn't be more proud to offer my first single ply yarn.  First, let me show it to you:

Prime close-up

Pictured here in Nautilus and surrounded by several of our shades of gray, you can see the gorgeous way Prime takes single shade colorways.  What you need to know to work with this yarn is that it is a true fingering weight, coming in at 425 yards per 100 grams.  It contains 90% Superwash Merino and 10% Silk, and while it's single-ply construction doesn't make it ideal for socks, it will be wonderful in almost any other hand-made garment you can dream up.  The silk content will make it especially nice for shawls and lace work, because there is just enough sheen for dreamy drape as well as added body superwash merino needs to retain lace stitch patterns without having to reblock between wearings.  Sweaters like Hitofude and Laneway would be stunning in this yarn.

Beyond the process of creating a whole new yarn from scratch, this time around I had the opportunity to offer this yarn exclusively with some very special stores.  Throughout 2015, Prime will only be available from For Yarn's Sake, Happy Knits, Serial Knitters, The Knitting Bee and my own website.  Each store has ordered a wide range of colors in sweater quantities, including some of our lovely new shades for 2015.  Check back around the beginning of March to see which ones we choose for ourselves!

My own first knit from this new yarn will probably be True Friend by Veera Välimäki in Moonshadow and ... some other contrast color I have yet to choose.  What will you knit?

Just got an order from Happy Knits (Butterbeer, Pheonix Rising and Pumpkin Patch). Lovely yarn and Pumpkin Patch is a particularly glorious colour way. I’ve only swatched so far as I’m finishing a Lilt gradient project. Must.Knit.Faster!
